How to collect Old Coins?
I am starting a Coin Collection but didnt know how. i dont know what circulated and uncirculated means. Also what proof coins are. I also would like to know a web site that shows good prises so i know im not getting ripped off. I do want to collect money as well. Any tips on how to get started is much appreciated.
The first thing you need to do is buy a book called, “A Guide Book of United States Coins” by R.S. Yeoman (also known as the Red Book). It is the basic book all Collectors of US coins should start with. Read it. It has answers to all the basic starter questions. The price lists in it are old because it is published only once a year so you can use a copy of CoinValues magazine for current pricing.
Next you should join a local coin club and consider joining the ANA (money.org). The ANA site can also help you find a local club. Visit local Coin Dealer shops and go to any coin shows in your area.
See what interest you. Club members and dealers are a great source of information about the hobby so do not hesitate to ask questions.
Eventually you will want to get a book on grading coins. Two good examples are the ANA official grading standards and “Grading Coins by Photographs” by Q. David Bowers.
Notice I have not yet said anything about Buying Coins. That is because one of the oldest sayings in the hobby is buy the book before buying the coin. In other words the more you know about the types of coins you want to buy the more likely you will make smarter purchases. Eventually you will begin buying coins and you will make a bad buy. Don’t worry about it everybody does it. It is part of the learning process. Just learn from the experience and don’t let it discourage you from having fun with a great hobby.
Good luck and enjoy what can be a life long pursuit.
